Parish History

St Matthew
St Matthew’s Roman Catholic Parish in Bishopbriggs was founded in 1946, serving a growing Catholic community in the area. In November 2026, the parish’s 80th anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate eight decades of faith, worship and community life.
The present church building was designed by the renowned Scottish architectural practice Gillespie, Kidd & Coia and opened in 1950. It features sculptural panels by Benno Schotz depicting scenes from the life of St Matthew.
As the population of Bishopbriggs grew, St Matthew’s became the mother parish for the local Catholic community. The neighbouring parish of St Dominic’s was established in 1973 to serve the expanding population.
